Orange County Choppers’ Paul Teutul Sr. Bombs
What Do Motorcycles Have To Do With Bicycles?
Nothing…other than the fact that they roll on two wheels and are cool too. But I’m not writing this post because motos are cool. I’m writing this post because what I experienced at this Orange County Choppers unveiling for the Monster Diesel custom build truly surprised me. And I think you’d enjoy hearing about it.
Paul Teutul Sr. bombed. And in my opinion, he bombed hard; voice cracking, stumbling, forgetting the product name he was endorsing, loosing his train of thought, and even forgetting to talk about the custom built chopper parked right in front of him (it had a diesel engine – we all wanted to know more!). This unveiling was filmed for TV and is going to be featured on American Chopper (Thursday Jan. 28th). It will be interesting to see how they edit the footage to make this look good.

Check out the video I grabbed. What I was able to capture was the second half of his presentation. I only started recording because he started bombing. His performance prior to this footage was even worse – if you can believe that.

Let’s Think About This For A Minute
Paul Sr. has been unveiling bikes for ten years now. He’s unveiled bikes in front of much larger crowds with much larger corporate sponsors. Why isn’t he at least semi-comfortable and some-what prepared? There were only about 200 people for the Monster Diesel unveiling and the company is still in start-up mode. I got the impression that Paul is now a hired gun – nothing more than a PR gimmick available for any corporation with a little cash in their marketing budget in need of reaping some exposure.

Why I Think Paul’s Bomb Is a Big Deal
I got the impression that the Monster Diesel bike was not so custom (aside from the diesel engine and paint). The bike was probably one of OCC’s production bikes with a few minor customizations. How could Paul not talk about the bike? Most likely because he wasn’t involved in any part of the build. The stammering, stuttering, and forgetting the product name? Trade mark signs of a guy who didn’t prepare. He was “winging it.” My assumption is that he’s too busy to prepare or simply doesn’t care. The company he has built is a monster brand with monster facilities, global reach, and an operating budget to match. The CEO needs to keep the lights on. It’s not about the craft anymore and it hasn’t been for a very long time. It all about selling the next bike and keeping the production line moving. This is probably the atmosphere that (along with the constant fighting) drove Paul Jr. away (and if you ask me, Paul Sr. owes a lot to his son for establishing OCC).

The Audience & Monster Diesel…Cheated.
I’m the type of guy that prides himself in doing his best work – especially when HIRED to do so. It was hard for me to watch this as I felt like the audience and the client (Monster Diesel) each got cheated. Had it been me or you up on that stage, we would have been boo’ed off fast. We need to hold “celebrities” to the same standards. Some members of the audience were noticeably frustrated and confused. But most didn’t bat an eyelash. They were mostly star struck and giddy by being able to see the man they see on TV.

Furthermore, this poor performance may foreshadow the upcoming fate of OCC. The show is in its last season. Paul has ramped up business to such a degree that OCC may not be able to sustain its infrastructure without the exposure and subsequent sales pipeline a TV show like American Choppers creates.
The Biggest Turn Off Of The Unveiling
In an attempt to explain his poor presentation, Paul jokes about how “doing drugs in the 60’s” has impaired his ability to speak (minute 1:06 in the video). Meanwhile his own son Mikey struggles with alcohol addiction.

Good article. Though, most would argue that Paul Sr. has never been a good public speaker. He tends to mumble his way thru everything to the point of embarrassment.
Such a shame. A couple years back they were trashing luxury vehicles, destroying their shop, having fun, making money, etc. Now look …

Thanks for the comment, Zeph. I had no idea how bad a speaker Paul was. The show is obviously quite scripted and edited. If anything, my crew and I were just amazed at how scripted the show must be (and most “reality programs”) to compensate for this.
I also like what you said in regards to the way the show used to be – as well as the crew – on American Chopper. There is something to be said for keeping a business at a manageable size in order to still enjoy life and keep it all in perspective.

Paul Sr. seems very upset about loosing the Faith of his 2 sons, Paul Jr. and Mike!!! I feel Paul Jr. is a better builder than his dad and that Mike is a great painter!
I was separated from my dad at a very young age and regretfully never had the chance to have a relationship with him. He favored 2 other siblings of mine. I was 49 when he died at 73. How sad!!!! He died not knowing how much love he could have had from myself and my family.
Paul Sr. must realize that every day that we are here on earth is a Blessing and how lucky he is to have had a relationship with his sons!!!!!!!!!!
Please before you die make sure your sons know you love them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take it from a daughter who loved her dad and never was able to tell him to his face that she loved him!!!!
There will be bikes made on and on, so make up and enjoy the years you have left together!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your heart felt comments and personal story, Linda. I agree. Life is short. Money is trite. Relationships are paramount.

Paul Sr. is loosing weight and seems preoccupied or on drugs. He was never a great speaker, but to botch a sponsors name and forget about the produce is worse than he normally is. In the TV parts now showing he seems to be trying to reach out to his kids and I have seen mention that he might have had a heart attack, but not confirmed at this time. Paul Jr. seemed to always come up with that stellar design that was several cuts above the things they are rubber stamping out now days. I think he will make it on his own in time. Just hope he doesn’t go the way his father is.

i got away from the show for a while but have been watching again just lately. i googled the subject to see if there was anything out there about Sr.’s status.
my opinion is that SOMETHING IS WRONG with Sr. he’s lost weight and always seems lost and seems to wait for reassurance from someone to validate what he’s saying / feeling.
a flaming-you-know-what is what he always was. can’t even be proud of his kids’ success. sad, sad, sad. seems that if he ever did something, anything for you, he owns you and if you don’t kiss his rear end and suck up to him, he will disown and do his best to bury you.
seems to have money (maybe?) and nothing else. was it all worth it?
sad and pathetic loser.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s really too bad. His kids are great people. We need people like Paul Sr. to remind us of who NOT to become.

I am in a situation with my two sons as you are where they think they are always right and know how I feel inside.Kids nomatter how old they get don t realize what they have by having a dad until they lose them by way of the grave.
I was very lucky to have had the time to makeup with my parents way before they pasted away.
I hope that you and them can some how put all this behind you and learn to appreciate each other and enjoy one another.
As far as JR . , he had a great teacher about bikes in you . Someday he may wake up to the fact that he would not be where he is today if it was not for you.
